    Music and Arts

First Presbyterian's music and arts family has all of this...and more. Much more.

Whether you're looking to participate or to sit back and enjoy what's offered, we invite you to join us. There are plenty of seats in the congregation...and there's plenty of room in our various groups.

First Presbyterian Church has a long and distinguished music and arts history. Our programs have not only enriched the congregation and the worship services, but have also reached into the community. We've made a difference there, too.

So we invite you to browse our website. Just click to find out more about music and arts at First Presbyterian!

    Keyboards

One thing about it, we're blessed with a plethora of pianos.

Gracing our Sanctuary is a seven-foot Steinway grand piano, donated to the church in the mid-1980s by Helen Light. The choir rehearsal room houses the other Steinway, a spinet.

The remaining pianos, all spinets, are scattered throughout the church, in music rooms, the fellowship hall, the chapel and several lounges.

The contemporary sanctuary houses a three-manual Austin 31-rank pipe organ with 19 stops. It has 1,899 pipes (the smallest the size of a pencil and the largest, 16 feet long. The organ was moved from the old church in 1924 and was installed in the present church in 1961. Its umbilical cord design allows it to be moved for concerts.

    Choral Music

Choral music at First Presbyterian has always played a strong role in church life. From the pioneering vision of Dr. Marie Boette, this church has both developed and attracted musicians with strong vocal skills.

Currently, the choirs rehearse in their own rehearsal room. We own a large number of major and minor choral works as well as more than 400 single titles. That's more than 36,000 pieces of music, rivaled only by our handbell music, which numbers 17,000!

      Sanctuary Choir
      September through June
      6:30-8 p.m. Sunday evenings and 10-10:25 a.m. Sunday mornings

The Sanctuary Choir, open to 9th graders through adult, usually sings each Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. We also sing for some special services throughout the year (like the "usual" church holidays), and have presented community concerts, alone and in conjunction with other musical groups in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Whether you're a listener or a singer, you'll hear a wide range of music from Sunday to Sunday. If you like contemporary, we sing it. If you like the classics, we sing them, too. And let's not forget the occasional spiritual or gospel piece.

      First Presbyterian Singers
      As Needed Throughout the Year
This small ensemble of singers presents challenging choral music, usually but not always classical, for special events and worship services throughout the year.

The group has sung for Christmas programs, recitals, and community events.

      Children's Choir
Sunday afternoons from September through June
The children gather on Sunday afternoons and prepare anything from musicals to medleys of songs. There's nothing quite like the sound of children's voices raised in worship.

    Handbells

Handbell music at First Presbyterian is a longstanding tradition. In fact, First Presbyterian's handbell program was the first established in the Mid-Ohio Valley - more than 25 years ago.

Our choirs play one of two sets of handbells -- a full five-octave set of Whitechapel Handbells, forged by hand in London, and a three-octave set of Malmark Handbells. We also own a set of hand chimes, perfect for children to learn on and when you're looking for a different sound. All of our bell equipment is housed in its very own rehearsal room, complete with custom-made tables.

Because of our commitment to musical excellence (and because we have that long history), we also have an extensive music library with handbell music ranging from early styles to contemporary arrangements.
      Juliana Ringers
      September through May
      5-6:30 p.m. Sunday evenings

The handbell program brings a variety of options to ringers of all abilities.

The Juliana Ringers serves as an outreach into the community, occasionally takes summer tours through neighboring states (including to Ameriflora's international exhibition in Columbus, Ohio), attends a AGEHR conferences and plays regularly for worship services throughout the year. Most importantly, though, we have fun.

    Marie Boette Concert Series

The Marie Boette Concert Series is an effort to continue the musical outreach and sharing that was such a vital part of Marie's lifetime of music.

The series aims to present at least one major concert yearly for area residents and including musicians from throughout the region and across the state. Other elements of the series include any artistic presentation, from the dramatic arts to the lively arts.

We are grateful to the many contributors to the Marie Boette Series and pay special tribute to our founding benefactors:
    • Julia Tebay Caplinger

    • Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dils

    • Pat and Bob Dunbar

    • Evelyn Esbenshade

    • John, Vicki and Chris Ferry

    • Genevieve Greene

    • Kathleen Reel

    • Helen Roberts

    • Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. Scothorn

    • Karen Van Camp and The Fine Art & Framing Gallery

    • Garnet S. Wilson

    • West Virginia Wesleyan College Emeritus Club

Past concerts have included the founding concert, Marie Boette: Celebrating a Lifetime of Music, as well as a Midsummer Night Music and Chocolate, a Tribute to African-American History, and a Boar's Head Feast, among others.

Most recently, we presented our fifth annual Palm Sunday Concert featuring Mozart's Coronation Mass. Other Palm Sunday concerts have included works such as Vivaldi’s Gloria and the Mozart, Brahms, and Rutter Requiems. We perform with an orchestra and invite local churches and singers to join us for this often standing-room only concert.

We donate a portion of the proceeds to Adventure Pursuit, a local organization whose mission is to bring "adventure" of all kinds to youth and adults, regardless of disability.
