| Responding to Need... | Hurricane
Katrina Like multitudes of congregations nationwide, First Presbyterian Church is struggling come to terms with the scale of the disaster Hurricane Katrina left behind. Below you'll find information and links that may help you determine how best to respond as an individual, as well as how we are responding as a church. Foremost, of course, is continuing prayers for the region, for the people affected, for the leaders, for the rescue workers and the salvagers who must determine how to begin to rebuild, and, let us not forget, the pets and animals who also suffer. |

We recommend the following link for the coordinated Presbyterian response:
Health Kits We are accepting donations for health kits at the church. The kits will be assembled by our youth during the Cardboard Box Campout on September 24-25. We'll ship the kits to Houston immediately afterward. Here's more information. Here's what we need for each personal health kit:
1 hand towel 1 wash cloth 1 comb 1 toothbrush 1 4-7 ounce tube of toothpaste 2 bars of bath size soap 1 container (non-aerosol) deodorant Seal all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure, and roll the bag up in the bath towel. We're considering organizing a work team to travel to an area where we're most needed once the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program alerts us that they're accepting Work Teams. If you're interested, you must be able to contribute one week or more and be in good health. Here's more information. Contact David Kaufman about First Presbyterian opportunities. Donations to PDA We also are accepting donations for PDA to benefit the recovery efforts. By donating to the PDA, you know your dollars will go to Presbyterian-sanctioned efforts. You can even donate online. Animal Lover? We recommend the disaster relief fund of the Humane Society of the United States. Additionally, you might consider a donation to the Parkersburg Humane Society, since relief donations to Katrina undoubtedly will affect its operating budget this year. |
